Helping make real estate dreams come true Greater Lakes Association of REALTORS Market Update: With the final days of the tax-credit for first-time home buyers approaching, home sales in the Greater Lakes region are showing some signs of life. There were 236 homes sold in September, up 14.0 percent from one year ago. That's also a slight increase from August, which is quite remarkable considering that September typically means a drop-off in sales as the school year begins. Home prices continue to decline, but this is partially a function of increased market share of non-waterfront homes, likely sparked by the federal tax credit for first-time home buyers. Good news for sellers: the Average Days on Market Until Sale is now shrinking and the Percent of Original List Price Received at Sale is now growing. House not selling? Listing contract expiring? BBC NEWS | Business | US bank failures hit 100 for year

US bank failures hit 100 for year The banking regulator says it has enough money to cover all failed banks The number of US bank failures this year has hit 100 after US federal regulators shut down the Florida-based Partners Bank. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which controls the banking sector, has taken over the bank that held $68.7m (£42.1m) in assets. More US banks have now failed this year than in any year since 1992. The number is expected to rise as banks continue to suffer from the bad loans that precipitated the financial crisis. Savers' money is not in danger, as the FDIC, which is backed by the US government, insures deposits at failed banks for up to $250,000 per account. Many of the banks that have failed have been small community banks, which were badly hit when loans to individuals and small businesses were not repaid after the onset of t...
Helping make real estate dreams come true Tentative signs that home prices have stopped falling may simply be too good to be true. Prices have in fact risen on a month-over-month basis in several of the widely followed price indices. We believe these price gains reflect the holding back of foreclosed properties from the market and a dearth of sales of higher-priced homes. While we expect home prices to decline further, we believe the bulk of the decline is behind us. The Case-Shiller 10-city index has declined a cumulative 32.3 percent since peaking in mid- 2006. We expect the absolute bottom to be around mid-2010, with a cumulative loss of 36 percent. from the WELLS FARGO SECURITIES, LLC ECONOMICS GROUP House not selling? BBC NEWS | Middle East | Court claim over camel 'beauty'

Court claim over camel 'beauty' Camels are highly prized in Arabia and can fetch huge sums of money A $250,000 compensation claim has been made against Saudi Arabia's oil giant Saudi Aramco for causing the death of a prized camel, local press reports say. The case, to be heard on Monday, involves a three-year-old black camel which fell into a large hole dug in the desert to store crude oil. The camel's owner is quoted saying the beast had been entered in one of the region's popular camel beauty pageants. The compensation claim is based on the value experts put on the camel. The owner, Abdullah Al-Saiari, said the she-camel was grazing in a desert pasture, about 150 miles (250km) west of Ahsa, when the accident happened. "She was part of the Camel Beauty Contest," he said, the Saudi Gazette reported. via news.bbc.co.uk looks a bit lippy to ...

Organize Your Fall Party | Family Economics

Organize Your Fall Party | Family Economics By Sarah Kimmel Although summer has ended the weather can cooperate for one final backyard bash!  Follow these easy tips and your party will sure to be the smoothest running party around.  Prep the Space – First things first and that is to get the backyard ready for guests.  This means picking up the dog’s messes, mowing the lawn, pulling weeds, etc.  One thing you may be tempted to do is to pick up the children’s toys.  While this is a good idea, make sure you leave some out for the kids at the party to play with.  Organize the Food Table – Bundle a knife, fork and spoon and wrap them in a napkin and simply tie it together with a piece of twine.  This will be convenient for your guests as they are preparing their plate.  Anything you can do to make getting all of their food and utensils together one handed will be helpful.  Once the food is in place, make sure to set it up in a logical ...

How Low can they go

According to Freddie Mac Posted: 12 Oct 2009 08:11 AM PDT According to Freddie Mac, 30-year-fixed-rate mortgage average fell further to 4.87 percent with an average 0.7 point for the week ending Oct. 8 from 4.94 percent last week. “Such low rates are spurring mortgage demand,” said Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac vice president and chief economist, in a statement. “Interest rates for 30-year fixed-rate loans were the lowest since mid-May; 15-year FRMs were at a record low since data were first collected in 1991 and 5-year ARMs also hit an all-time record starting in 2005. Compared to a year ago, consumers could shave almost $134 off their monthly mortgage payments on a 30-year fixed-rate loan for $200,000 by refinancing. In addition to spurring mortgage demand, applications were up to a 19-week high over the week ending in Oct. 2, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association – applications to purchase a home were at the strongest pace since the beginning of 2009 Kathleen Lordbock ...
